Judge Confirms Patent

A Federal Judge validated the patent for the drug Zyprexa on Thursday. Zyprexa is a schizophrenia drug that brought in over four million dollars in sales last year alone. The patent will make it impossible for smaller competitors to market a similar product for at least another six years. This is a great example of the United States Judicial System controlling the market. While the patent helps encourage future research, it hurts the consumers because they will probably have to pay higher prices due to the new regulations given to the drug company.

High prices are never welcomed, but some regulation is needed. How high of price would you pay to know that the drug you are taking will not kill you.

If we didn't have patents what company would spend millions of dollars in research and development? Everybody would wait around hoping to steal someone's ideas to save money and progress would be at a standstill.

I agree with Homer. I takes millions of dollars and years of research to develop a drug and to get it passed through the FDA. Patents are incentives to invent. Incentives are part of what makes capitalism so successful.

I guess I'll leave the duplicate post up, since people have commented on both.
