Canada is Next!!

I guess it is now Canada's turn to sue the tobacco companies. The article states that over the next few years, there will be lawsuits against the tobacco companies to help pay for the medical costs associatied with smoking. I think that this stuff is a joke. If a consumer chooses to smoke then let them face the consequences, or another possibility is to just outlaw tobacco entirely. Of course this will never happen because goverments make too much money off of the taxes that tobacco generates. How many other products that when used as intended result in death are allowed to be sold on store shelves? In my opinion, this is nothing more than the government having their cake and eating it too.

Great blog! I agree that if you choose to smoke then you must face the consequences. People expect other people to clean up their own messes. This same thing happened to McDonalds, the people that are over weight blame McDonalds.

For the most part I strongly agree with you, that people need to take responsibility for their own actions. However, I think the issue with the tobacco companies is that they tried to cover up studies and data that proved that tobacco causes cancer. I think it’s more the dishonesty and deception that is being punished. I do think that the tobacco companies have unfairly been singled out though for the bad effects caused by their products. In my opinion alcohol causes many more problems.

I absolutely agree that we all need to take personal responsibility for our own actions. If we are willingly performing an act that has been proven to cause problems, then when we face those issues ourselves we should not be able to cry for help!

There's no doubt in my mind that we all need to take personal responsibility for our actions. Unfortuneatly in our society were becoming more accustomed to blaming others. It's much easier to say it's someone elses fault than our own, even if there's a warning on the label.

-1 on Mia's comment for a spelling error.

Dan: try to make the text of your link more informative next time.

I think all the points here are solid. I would add that this is the sort of behavior we should expect when the government starts paying the bills for something (in this case, medical care).

I don't think anyone in Canada would be successful in sueing the tobacco companies. I've personally seen the packaging of some of these cigarettes that are sold and they consist of real photos of lung disease and other effects of these products on the body. The tobacco companies, I feel, are doing the BEST they can to warn of these effects and I think that would hold up strongly if ever brought before the courts. People choosing to pull out another smoke and seeing that picture of lung disease are willingly exposing themselves to the risks.

Dr. Tufte said that the points are solid and I agree. If people are stupid and kill themselves by doing things that are known to deteriorate the body let them face the consequences.

Agreed.
