The Red Hat Society

A new craze has increased the demand for red hats and flamboyant purple outfits. The Red Hat Society is an organization for fun loving ladies over 50. In the past couple of years, there has been a large increase of chapters, web sites, and merchandise related to the Red Hat Society.

The owner of a Merle Norman store started selling Red Hat items about a year ago. She had a lot of inquiries and people were finding it difficult to find a red hat or any kind of accessories that go with a red hat.

What a great idea...all around us are little ideas just waiting to be found that would have great market potential.

These women are living their lives to the fullest. If there wasn't such a society, some of these woman would not be doing the things they are. The Red Hat Society is great for women. You can see how happy the women are. Recently, I had seen them dance during a half time game at the University of Utah. There is an 87 year old woman out there showing her stuff. Because of this society she is still moving! I think more need to join.

Studies show that men die before women. For many women, this results in a void that good friends can help fill. By the time I'm 50+, I hope that I have worked hard enough to be able to take some time and money and enjoy doing whatever I want. My purpose will not be social benefits, just personal fulfillment. If I want to go to lunch and gossip....that's exactly what I'll do!!

I think that men just do not like the idea of just being able to meet with friends and talk. There is a different in gossip and meeting with friends. My grandma just recently joined a group and I haven't seen her happier. My grandpa passed away nearly 5 years ago and so she hasn't had anyone to talk to. Getting these groups together gives people a chance to not gossip but be social. This helps people everyday. They have a reason to wake up every morning. If they had no one, they wouldn't care. This is why many males pass away after their wives. They get lonely. This group helps prevent that.

what a great thing to do! I have spent good paper money to buy my wife a red hat to support her joining this thing. Many possibilities here--service, sharing, and stepping out of one's self

-1 on Stevenpadilla2's comment for a spelling and a grammatical error.

There actually is an economic theory for silliness of social groups. The collective silly behavior is a way to build group identity, both within and outside the group. It's the equivalent of a secret handshake. It's purpose is to eliminate free riding: for example, you can't get the benefits of being a "red hat lady" without the expense of wearing a red hat more often than you'd otherwise care to.

Only problem is, that this theory comes from the economic theory of religion. Religions everywhere are rife with requirements (days of rest, dietary restrictions, clothing and grooming restrictions) that are deemed ... hmmm ... peculiar at best by non-members. And, of course, they can't all be simultaneously right. Often these behaviors are very public - so that even a casual attachment can advertise your membership in that religious group. Increasingly secretive rituals are then reserved for people who want to become less casual in their observance.

BTW: Monty Python's Flying Circus picked up on this 30 years ago with a skit about an insurance company that required a very large ... umm ... sample ... in order to make sure that you were serious about buying their product.
