I'm Sick and Tired
When I was a young boy I always heard my parents say "I'm Sick and Tired", and I would laugh at them, but now that I'm a dad with responsibility I'm sick and tired. I'm sick and tired everything going up in price and my wages staying the same. I'm sick and tired of others trying to tell me how to think, I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired.

-1 on Bart's post for no link (I hate to do that because I agree with him, but it's my policy).
Bart's feeling is an example of tragedy of the commons - which we will be covering in an experiment soon. A parent (typically) is a public good from the perspective of the rest of the family - and public goods tend to get abused. This is one of the reasons why families with well defined roles or jobs for members, and reasonable links between carrots and sticks report that they are more happy. (Note that this doesn't necessarily mean that they have to be gender-specific or gender-traditional roles, just roles that are understood by everyone).
